Hi people,
After 6 months on-and-off struggles with Hyper/LX and battling with this archaic forum program, here is an experience-based list for the way to lessen the load on admin here and remove the frustration that new users of both pro hosters and end users suffer from and which loses so many triers and stops LXLABS REALLY booming.
I would have long ago quit myself, except for program itself and its superior capabilities technically.
The main problem is simple:
No pathway information.
Support here is great - if YOU ALREADY know the question to ask!
A solution - THE solution:
DOCUMENTATION
Key question always: WHO IS THIS FOR?
1. INTRO TO LXADMIN
1.1. For End Users
1.2 For pro Hosters
1.3 For wannabe Hosters
2. INTRO TO HYPERVM
(Repeat as above)
I've already seen some great helpers here (Drank, for 1) who could help with this one vital shortcoming of LXLABS: DOCS.
Not tech docs, but simple How-to's.
Making walk-thru "videos" is such a snap today (look at http://virtualmin.com ) the only real competitor I see after Cpanel.
If *I* could only work out what things do and when to use/not use
Hypervm/HIB/Lxadmin, I'd do it.
E.G.s
WHO IS THIS FOR?
I've only just found out that Hypervm is not really necessary(?) to only run LXAsmin/HIB.
We have 2 distinct groups here:
RESELLERS (Newby and pro)
END-USERS (Newby & Pro)
They need to be SEPARATED
But without systematic pathing this mess will continue.
Simple screen walk-thrus - voice over would be nice.
Doc 1:
"Who Is what For?"
Video 1:
"How 2 install Hypervm"
Video2:
"How to install Lxadmin or HIB"
Video 3:
(THE BIG ONE!!!!)
"How to Setup your END USER VPS Account".
Example: ME! All I want to do is to IMPLEMENT the Account that my Hosting Provider has supplied with my VPS.
But: all I've got is lotsa funny buttons and warning messages.
almost no popups that make sense to a USER (not geek)
As a User/self hoster, I need a simple onscreen walk-thru of how to get started:
1. How to add my initial IPs and Domains
2. How to check them.
3. Where to upload what files.
4. How to install scripts
99.9% of all the potential out there is the end-user who needs a simple set of options and COMPREHENSIVE how-tos for those everyday simple demands. Most buttons should even be hidden under an option as "EXPERT USER ONLY".
And NEVER tell end users to use the dreaded, deadly CLI.
My own long user experience (and great frustration) with Servers over the years has always been frustrated by .... documentation. Either non-existent or worse, written in policeman-style Geek.
I have only persisted because I ultimately want to control as much of the system I use (and thus security) as possible.
Knowledge is power... but only if usable
But right around now, a simple shared hosting with Cpanel is starting to look good again.... :-{
HELP!
I will add personal queries to this Forum shortly which might help us really get something going here.
Cheers!
What a package it is! Now,if only I could get it to work for me.....
