virtualization-type=NONE still shows driver as openvz [message #61684] Wed, 08 April 2009 17:28 Go to next message

Hi there,

I setup a central backup server. I installed it as a slave with virtualization-type=NONE.

However, in the server list, it shows up as using the openvz driver.

I checked the kernel, and it's the normal CentOS kernel. Any ideas why the driver shows up as openvz?

 . /script/directory
 lphp.exe ../bin/common/setdriver.php --server=slave-id --class=vps --driver=xen

thanks.

Thanks, but the command you provided allowed me to change the driver to xen. But it is NOT a xen server. It is actually a NONE server. Is that what you were hoping to achieve?

Thanks.

Then the driver is irrelevant.

I still think it's a bug. It could be misleading if you have a few hundred servers and you rely on HyperVM to tell you what each server is running. Right now, anyone other than me that looks at our servers from inside HyperVM will assume the backup server is running a xen kernel. I just thought you would want to report driver correctly (i.e. it should be empty or say NONE).

Thanks.

Except the NONE option is supposed to be used when you already have a virtualization system in place.

Thanks for helping.

I guess my question then is, if you want to manage dedicated servers or central backup servers, you are supposed to install virtualization software? Even if you are not virtualizing? That doesn't seem to make sense.

The ability to manage servers without virtualization seems like it would be a given since in the feature for HyperVM set it says:

"Manage your entire data center from a central console."

This would probably include non-virtualized servers.

I can't imagine it would be so difficult to simply be able to see if a given server is running a virtualization kernel when looking at the list of servers via HyperVM.

The driver for NONE would be set with:

. /script/directory
 lphp.exe ../bin/common/setdriver.php --server=slave-id --class=vps --driver=NONE

Anyhow, not trying to be a nuisance. I just want to contribute to making the product better if I can. Thanks.

But the driver doesn't matter. It is merely software to interact with the virtualization software. With no virtualization software, you don't need to even look at the driver.
