Does anyone have any information to share on OpenVZ and thread limits? Is it common for OpenVZ providers to use these limits and what are the standards? Are these set limits or are they limits among all the nodes?
I ask this because I was working with someone on an httpd.worker as a reverse proxy to httpd.itk-mod_php and the worker was failing to use anything over 100 threads, though I don't remember if he had to lower it even more. I have it working on a test Xen domU with over 2000 threads without any problems.

Ah I did some further research from that post and I think the failure is in allocating the memory which would be listed as VSZ in top. As you have seen applications will allocate much more memory than they would ever utilize. I think the httpd.worker will want to have this as high as 2GB, even though in reality is ends up using well under 100 MB with more than 2000 threads. I'll talk to this guy and see if he can have his host up the privvmpages to 100000. Very interesting.
