The VG should be 500 GB.
The root LV should be about 30 to 50 GB
/home should be 50 GB to start with. This separation lets you easily expand it as it is an LV. /home is where all the backups go.
The unused space in the VG is used to create thick provisioned LVs for the guest machines.

Well the DC should only need to set up the VG and the root LV. You can do the /home LV yourself afterwards. Sorry I don't know how I can better say this...

the DC setup VG and the HDD with this configuration

[root@server2 ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
tmpfs 2.8G 0 2.8G 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 146M 30M 108M 22% /boot
none 2.8G 104K 2.8G 1% /var/lib/xenstored
[root@server2 ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 20 153600 83 Linux
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 20 60802 488231960 8e Linux LVM
[root@server2 ~]#

I think lvdisplay might help more. I'd have to compare this evening against a test system.

Well it isn't set up correctly then. As you see the LV size is 461.61 GB. HyperVM will have nothing to allocate. The good new is that you can shrink the root filesystem and then you can shrink the logical volume.
